Integrated Information Theory (IIT)

IIT, the pseudoscience debate, honest evaluation: the claim that consciousness is integrated information, a mathematical quantity called Φ (phi) — currently one of the most-cited and most-contested theories of consciousness.
Context
The theory that starts from the inside. Giulio Tononi — a sleep scientist and psychiatrist, Edelman's collaborator — proposed Integrated Information Theory in 2004 by running the explanation backwards: don't start from the brain and work toward experience; start from the axioms of experience itself (it exists intrinsically, it's structured, specific, unified, definite) and derive what physical systems could realize them. The answer: consciousness is integrated information — the degree, called Φ, to which a system's whole carries information beyond its parts. High-Φ systems are conscious; the theory says which, and how much, in principle for any system: brains, octopuses, photodiodes, silicon.
The most contested theory in the field. IIT is simultaneously among the most-cited theories of consciousness and the one under the heaviest fire. In September 2023, after the adversarial-collaboration results were reported (previous unit), an open letter signed by 124 researchers branded IIT "pseudoscience" — unfalsifiable in practice, covertly panpsychist — and the field split loudly and publicly over whether the label was fair; surveys afterwards showed roughly 8% fully endorsing it and 20% fully rejecting it, everyone else in between. Scott Aaronson's 2014 critique is the sharpest single objection: by IIT's own math, a large grid of XOR gates — doing nothing anyone would call thinking — can have Φ far exceeding a human brain's. Most critics read that as a reductio; Tononi bit the bullet and answered that the grid would be conscious. Whether that's admirable consistency or the theory refuting itself is exactly the judgment this unit trains.
Know what you're endorsing. IIT 4.0 (2023) makes its metaphysics explicit — only intrinsic, phenomenal existence "truly exists," which sits closer to idealism than to the physicalism most of its scientific audience assumes. None of this makes the theory worthless: it is the only major theory precise enough to be attacked with mathematics, which is itself a compliment. But this unit needs the most critical scaffolding in the whole curriculum — read the theory and its prosecutors together.

Anchor. Giulio Tononi, Phi: A Voyage from the Brain to the Soul. His own popularization, semi-fictional, modeled on Dante. Idiosyncratic, but it shows what he's actually claiming. ~8 hours.
Companion (essential counterweight). Aaronson's "Why I Am Not An Integrated Information Theorist" — required before taking IIT seriously (~1 hour, free) — plus the 2023 letter and one proponent response (Mediano et al.).
Companion (balanced). "Integrated information theory: the good, the bad and the misunderstood" (2025) — separates legitimate critiques from misunderstandings.
The finish line is a considered position that is neither "obviously true" nor "obviously crank."
