Predictive processing and the free energy principle

Friston, Clark, the brain as inference engine: the brain as a hierarchical prediction engine that continually generates models of the world and updates them against sensory input. Currently the most ambitious unifying framework in cognitive neuroscience.
Context
The 19th-century seed. Hermann von Helmholtz noticed in the 1860s that perception cannot be passive reception: the retinal image is hopelessly ambiguous, so the brain must infer the world — "unconscious inference," he called it, scandalizing colleagues who thought inference required awareness. The idea hibernated for a century, returned as Bayesian perception in the 1990s, and crystallized in Karl Friston's free energy principle (2005–): organisms persist by minimizing surprise — the gap between what their generative model predicts and what their senses deliver — either by updating the model (perception) or by acting to make the predictions true (action). Perception and action become one loop: the brain as a hierarchical prediction engine, with sensory input serving mainly as error signal.
Power and its price. This is currently the most ambitious unifying framework in cognitive neuroscience — it explains illusions, action, attention (precision-weighting), interoception, and psychiatric symptoms in one vocabulary, and Andy Clark's philosophical work makes the sweep vivid. Its ambition is also the standing objection: Friston is among the most-cited neuroscientists alive and famously hard to pin down; critics note that a principle flexible enough to accommodate any behavior risks predicting none (the "dark room problem" — why don't surprise-minimizers just sit still in the dark? — has answers, but earning them takes care). The field's running joke is that the free energy principle cannot be falsified, only understood, and Friston has himself noted it is a principle, like least action — the falsifiable content lives in the specific models built under it.
One clarity to hold throughout. Predictive processing is not a theory of the hard problem. It is an account of how brains process information — compatible with functionalism, illusionism, IIT, even panpsychism. It may explain the structure of experience (why the world shows up as objects, why moods color perception) while leaving why there is experience at all exactly where Chalmers put it. Anyone who tells you prediction error is consciousness has skipped a step; this unit teaches you to name which one.

Companion. Mark Solms, The Hidden Spring — a neuropsychoanalyst-turned-Fristonian arguing consciousness is rooted in affect rather than cognition. Idiosyncratic, stimulating.
Do not start with Friston's papers. They are notoriously difficult; Clark is the gateway.
Ground it in one concrete illusion — the hollow mask, binocular rivalry, or hallucination as over-weighted priors — and the whole framework clicks.
