Heterodox and fringe

Penrose/Orch-OR, panpsychism, Kastrup, the honest edge cases: maps the heterodox positions with honest epistemic labels — better to map them cleanly than to let them contaminate the earlier units.

Context

Why map the fringe at all. Any serious engagement with consciousness eventually meets the heterodox positions — usually through a podcast, usually presented with more confidence than the mainstream ever musters. Better to map them cleanly, with honest epistemic labels, than to let them either contaminate the core units or get dismissed unexamined. This unit is that map.

The labeled specimens. Orch-OR (Penrose–Hameroff): consciousness arises from quantum gravitational effects in neuronal microtubules — born when Stuart Hameroff, an anesthesiologist wondering how anesthetics switch consciousness off, wrote to Penrose after reading The Emperor's New Mind. Mostly rejected by both physics and neuroscience (the brain looks too warm and wet for the required coherence; Tegmark's decoherence estimates, though contested, have never been overturned to the field's satisfaction) — but it is real science by real scientists, not crankery, and it makes the useful separation below. Panpsychism (Goff, Strawson): experience as a fundamental feature of matter — philosophically serious, scientifically non-mainstream, and openly stuck on the combination problem: how do micro-experiences sum to a mind? Analytic idealism (Kastrup): consciousness as the sole ontological primitive — a serious construction, marginal in academic philosophy. Process philosophy (Whitehead): historically deep; use secondary sources unless you enjoy suffering. Psychedelic phenomenology: Carhart-Harris's REBUS model is legitimate peer-reviewed neuroscience; Grof's transpersonal cosmology is not; keeping those two apart is the whole skill.

The separation that pays for the unit. Penrose's philosophical argument — that Gödel's theorem shows human mathematical insight is non-algorithmic — is distinct from the Orch-OR physical proposal, and evaluating it requires knowing exactly what Gödel proved and did not prove (the foundations crisis). The argument has been answered in print many times (the standard reply: Gödel's theorem constrains consistent formal systems, and nothing shows human mathematicians are one); Penrose has counter-answered; the exchange is the best available case study in how a great scientist's argument can be widely judged wrong yet never quite die.
