Getting Out of Your Head

the direct methods

Both senses intended: leaving the ego, and going a little wild. Everything here is a method for changing consciousness directly rather than by argument. The measure that matters is altered traits, not altered states.

2.1

Meditation, deepened

Past the ten-minute app habit into something with a technical structure — stages, obstacles, and a way to tell progress from pleasantness.

do

Forty-five minutes on the breath. Track forgetting-and-catching, not calm — the count of times you noticed you'd left is the actual measurement.

done when you can tell a productive difficult sit from an unproductive pleasant one.

2.2

Effortless awareness

The non-dual pointer traditions: instead of concentrating harder, noticing what is already aware. Short glimpses, many times a day, rather than long formal sits.

do

Loch Kelly's glimpse: 'am I aware right now?' Five to ten times a day, for a few seconds each. Set no timer.

done when the glimpse has started arriving unprompted.

2.3

Psychedelics, handled with care

The evidence is real and so are the risks. What matters is set, setting and integration — the molecule is the least interesting part. This unit is integration-first and non-drug by design.

Educational only. This is not medical, legal or therapeutic advice, and not encouragement to obtain or use anything. Psychedelics are Schedule I under US federal law; legality varies by jurisdiction and changes fast — decriminalised is not legal. Contraindications include personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, recent lithium, serotonergic drugs and MAOIs, cardiac conditions or uncontrolled hypertension, and pregnancy. Screen first. Harm reduction: never alone, a trained sitter, test your substances, low and slow, and plan the integration before anything else.

Integration, without a substance: take one past peak experience — a dream, a moment of awe, a grief — and integrate it over a week. Journal it, extract exactly one change, take one action on that change.

done when you can say why set, setting and integration matter more than the molecule; you know your own jurisdiction's legal position; and you can name three contraindications.

2.4

Breathwork

The one lever that reaches the autonomic nervous system directly and voluntarily. Ranges from the trivially safe and well-evidenced to the genuinely dangerous.

read

do

Hyperventilation-style breathwork can cause fainting. Never in or near water — shallow-water blackout has killed people — and never while driving. Contraindicated in pregnancy, epilepsy, cardiovascular conditions and severe panic disorder. Seated or lying down only.

The physiological sigh — double inhale through the nose, long exhale through the mouth — five minutes daily. It is the fastest evidenced route to calming down that exists.

done when you reach for it automatically when your body is ahead of your mind.

2.5

Flow

The state where self-consciousness disappears through absorption rather than dissolution. The same destination as the meditation units, reached from the opposite direction.

do

One ninety-minute block. Phone off and out of the room. Difficulty about four percent above comfortable. A clear goal and immediate feedback. Once a week.

done when you have lost an hour to something on purpose, more than once.

Traps

  • ·Chasing states instead of traits. Bliss is not insight, and a good sit is not the point.
  • ·Psychedelics as tourism rather than practice — integration is where the change is actually made.
  • ·Ignoring safety and contraindication realities because the framing is spiritual.
