Your Own Rule of Life

the page that turns a reading list into a life

Regula means trellis, not regulation — a structure a living thing grows on. Benedict's Rule has kept people balanced for fifteen hundred years, and it is portable and entirely securalisable. This page assembles everything above into one page of your own, and then makes you live it for a season.

5.1

What a Rule is, and isn't

Moderation rather than severity. The Rule's genius is that it is sustainable — designed for ordinary people over decades, not for heroics over a fortnight.

read

do

Draft one page. Name your three sources of meaning, and for each, the one daily practice that protects it. One page — if it needs two, it's a productivity system.

done when you have a Rule short enough to remember without reading it.

5.2

The daily office

The monastic horarium as a model for anchoring a day at fixed points rather than optimising it. The Ignatian Examen as the evening half.

read

do

Five minutes of intention in the morning, five minutes of examen in the evening. Two weeks without negotiating.

done when the two anchors have survived a genuinely bad week.

5.3

The weekly rhythm

Heschel on the Sabbath as a cathedral built in time rather than space. The weekly scale is where connection and beauty actually get protected, or don't.

read

  • anchorThe SabbathAbraham Joshua Heschel
  • The Sabbath WorldJudith Shulevitz

do

One block of three hours or more, weekly, with nothing instrumental in it. Inside it, one practice from Connection and one from Beauty.

done when the block has survived four weeks and you have stopped defending it.

5.4

Seasons, and re-vowing

Conversatio morum — the monastic vow to keep converting. A Rule that cannot be revised becomes a cage; one that is revised constantly was never a Rule.

read

  • anchorLet Your Life SpeakParker Palmer
  • Four Thousand WeeksOliver Burkeman

do

A half-day alone at the turn of each season to revise exactly one line. A full rewrite once a year, and not more often.

done when you have revised it once without abandoning it.

5.5

Integration

The coverage check. A Rule that quietly drops one whole domain is the most common failure, and the easiest to catch by looking.

read

  • anchorYour own one-page Rule
  • Sabbath poemsWendell Berry
  • Digital MinimalismCal Newport

do

Read your Rule against these six pages. At least one Connection practice and one Beauty practice must appear on a fixed cadence. If they don't, the Rule is about you alone, and that's the failure mode.

done when someone other than you appears in your Rule, on a schedule.

Traps

  • ·Rebuilding a productivity system. A Rule is oriented at meaning and love, not output.
  • ·Over-engineering it. Start with two or three anchors that survive a bad week.
  • ·Copying someone else's. A borrowed Rule is a costume.
